Meghalaya: Forum Rejects Connection of Mukroh Firing Incident to Border Talks

SHILLONG: In the ongoing border dispute resolution talks between Meghalaya and Assam, the Hynniewtrep Border Dispute Redressal Forum (HBDRF) in Meghalaya has vehemently rejected attempts by Assam government officials to associate the Mukroh firing incident with the negotiation process. The forum has emphasized that the incident holds no relevance to the border discussions.

The Mukroh firing incident, which occurred on November 22 of the previous year, tragically claimed the lives of six individuals, including five from Meghalaya and one Assam forest guard staff. However, the HBDRF firmly asserts that this tragic occurrence is entirely unrelated to the ongoing border dispute talks and should not be utilized as a tool for misdirection or confusion.

Thomas Passah, the spokesperson for the forum, highlighted that the inquiry commission established by the Assam government to investigate the Mukroh firing incident made a reference to the jurisdiction of the Jrikyndeng police station. According to Passah, this reference substantiates Meghalaya's claim over Mukroh, as "Jrikyndeng" is a term rooted in the Pnar language, which is native to Meghalaya, rather than being an Assamese or Karbi term.

The HBDRF's statement emphasizes the geographical location of Mukroh, asserting its position within Meghalaya's territorial boundaries. The forum warns against any manipulation of facts that could potentially portray Mukroh as a part of Assam's territory, labeling such attempts as deliberate misinformation.

The forum's stance not only underscores the need to maintain the integrity of the border dispute resolution talks but also seeks to prevent the exploitation of a tragic incident for political or territorial gains. By dissociating the Mukroh firing incident from the ongoing negotiations, the HBDRF aims to refocus the discussions on the substantive matters related to the border dispute between the two states.

In conclusion, the Hynniewtrep Border Dispute Redressal Forum (HBDRF) in Meghalaya stands firm against any attempt to link the Mukroh firing incident with the ongoing border dispute talks with Assam. The forum's spokesperson emphasizes that the incident has no bearing on the negotiations and warns against misrepresentation. This firm stance serves to ensure that the dialogue remains focused on resolving the border dispute in a fair and accurate manner.
